Whether in normal driving or in competition the term acceleration is often used to describe
the motion of an automobile.  Many people think that acceleration is how fast a car is
moving.  Quite the contrary, acceleration does not say how fast a car is moving, but rather
how fast(what rate) the speed is changing.  For instance, a car moving at a slow constant
spees that begins to increase its speed can have the same acceleration as a car moving at
a faster constant speed that begins to increase its speed if the
difference between the
beginning speed and the final speed is the same for both cars over the same amount of trime.

Example:  
  • Car A increases its speed from 20 mph to 30 mph over a time of 5 seconds.  Its
    acceleration is 30 mph minus 20 mph divided by 5 seconds which is equal to 2
    mph/second.

  • Car B increases its speed from 55 mph to 65 mph over a time of 5 seconds.  Its
    acceleration is 65 mph minus 55 mph divided by 5 seconds which is equal to 2
    mph/second.

You see, the acceleration is the same for both cars but their speeds are different.
